Network Performance Testing

From homes and offices through to production plants: everyone is looking at network service providers and equipment manufacturers to ensure outstanding network performance for work and play. Yet, what is ‘outstanding’ network performance’ all about? More than speed and bandwidth, it is also about latency. Make sure to measure, diagnose and optimize every single aspect, to deliver the quality of service that everyone expects.

Performance Testing: Challenges

Network performance is a complex interplay of many distinct factors: from bandwidth and scale (number of devices, hosts, users, and applications) through to topology. What is more, it easily varies over time.

So, to effectively measure, monitor, diagnose and optimize network performance you need deep-rooted expertise and state-of-the-art measurement tools that tick the following boxes:

✔ Historical data and tools are necessary to be able to analyze your network over time, compare its behavior in the past and present and perform successful root-cause analysis.

✔ Reproducible: To measure progress, make sure your tools and environment support reproducible tests, and can control and monitor the input (traffic generator) and output, plus all the devices in-between if needed (monitoring + traffic generator/analyzer).

✔ Accurate and powerful: Use synchronized measurement tools to monitor one-way latency on large setups, with many ports and at different speeds. And ensure your tools are up to supporting the skyrocketing speed enabled by new technologies like GPON, NBASE-T, 5G, 10G DOCSIS, etc.

✔ End-to-end: Include all components that can impact performance. For Wi-Fi and mobile (4G/5G ), for example, the end devices are key.

✔ Relevant: Use relevant scenarios such as IPv4 or IPv6 with or without network translation.

✔ Large-scale: As your network performance will vary according to the number of devices, hosts, users, and applications, you will need a set-up that can scale to large networks.

Network Performance Testing with Excentis

Network and device testing has been our core business, at Excentis, ever since our foundation. As well as the experience and the expertise, we also have the measurement tools that tick all the above boxes. Here is how we can help:

Reproducible, accurate testing with ByteBlower® and ByteBlower WEP

Our ByteBlower traffic generator/analyzer and ByteBlower Endpoint, as its mobile extension, were designed to monitor and measure the performance of wired and Wi-Fi networks and products, respectively. Exceptionally intuitive, accurate and powerful, these help you to cover every blind spot and ensure truly outstanding network performance.
