Today, Network Address Translators (or NAT) devices are everywhere. Their rapid rise towards universal adoption was not part of a planned effort. Instead, it was fueled by the continued growth of the internet and the corresponding depletion of the IPv4 address space. Besides obvious advantages, such as IP address reuse and hiding of internal network topologies, NAT technology has some important drawbacks as well.
